The Battle of Algiers is presented in its original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1. Black bars at the top and bottom of the screen are normal for this format. Supervised by director of photography Marcello Gatti, this new high-definition digital transfer was created on a C-Reality from a 35mm restored fine-grain master positive. Thousands of instances of dirt, debris, and scratches were removed using the MTI Digital Restoration System. The soundtrack was mastered at 24-bit from a 35mm optical print track, and audio restoration tools were used to reduce clicks, pops, hiss, and crackle. The Dolby Digital 1.0 signal will be directed to the center channel on 5.1-channel sound systems, but some viewers may prefer to switch to two-channel playback for a wider dispersal of the mono sound.
The 1999 film restoration ofThe Battle of Algiers was undertaken at Cinecittà as part of the “Adopt a Film: 100 Films Worth Saving” project, promoted by the Council of Ministry and funded by contributions from the cities of Salerno and Montemurlo. The work was supervised by Carlo Cotta and approved by Gillo Pontecorvo and Marcello Gatti. |
